Baton Twirling

Baton involves dancing, gymnastics, coordination, flexibility and agility. There is competitive twirling and twirling for high school or colleges as a majorette.

Tricks

The entirety of baton is based on the thumb toss, which is a mandatory trick for every routine. This trick is when you roll the baton over your thumb before you toss it. Under the toss as a twirler becomes more advanced they begin doing spins, cartwheels, and more under these tosses. For team routines twirlers do exchanges meaning they thumb toss between all of them.

About them

Baton is like any sport, when a participant does not do what they should it can cause injuries. Common injuries in baton are ACL tears, dislocated knees, shoulder problems, and hip flexor strains.

ACL TEARS

ACL tears are one of the most common sports injuries athletes have. Recovery for ACL tear in Baton puts you out for the season

DISLOCATED KNEE

A dislocated knee happens in baton more often then some assume, they happen when the ligaments holding your knee in place tear. It is fixed by surgery, recovery is 6 weeks and than to be fully recovered to participate in baton takes about 10 weeks. Once an athlete goes back to their sport after it has happened once, it is more likely for it to happen again. We have a story about this on our Personal Experience tab.

SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain in baton is caused by the gymnastic moves twirlers do when they are performing. The most common problems baton twirlers have with their shoulders is inflammation supraspinatus tendon and rotator cuff injuries. To help with these types of injuries wearing a sling or shoulder strap.

HIP FLEXOR STRAINS

Hip flexor strains are common in baton twirling, but are the most unnoticed by many. For this twirlers need to go to physical therapy for many weeks. This injury is caused when twirlers are doing walkovers, aerials and splits.
